The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to soon file a first information report (FIR) against Jet Airways promoter Naresh Goyal and his close aides for allegedly defrauding banks and misappropriating loans sanctioned by them.
This follows an internal preliminary enquiry, which found that the allegations are prima facie true, said people aware of the development. “Jet Airways is one of the many cases that is pending before the Maharashtra government for seeking general consent so as to register a case in Mumbai.
Once the same is awarded, FIR can be registered in the case,” said one of the persons quoted above. The state’s consent is needed for the CBI to register an offence in Maharashtra.
The probe will focus on transactions concerning maintenance agreements, lease agreements and those with the general sales agent (GSA), said the people cited above.
Bank Officials Also Under Scanner “The loans availed of by the carrier weren’t used for the purpose they were sanctioned,” said the official. “The probe will focus on the circumstances under which these loans were sanctioned and disbursed — the end use. The role of bank officials for deliberate omission and commission and corruption will also be investigated.”
Jet Airways was acquired by the Kalrock-Jalan consortium in bankruptcy proceedings. The new owners plan to restart the carrier this year.
