A prominent Islamic cleric has sparked fresh debate by calling on the Muslim community to maintain distance from popular actor and TVK chief Vijay, citing his portrayal of Muslims in certain films. The statement arrives just as Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), is gearing up its outreach across Tamil Nadu.

Cleric Issues Warning Over Anti-Muslim Film Portrayals
Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, president of the All India Muslim Jamaat (AIMJ), issued a fatwa that strongly discourages Muslims from supporting Vijay or inviting him to any religious or social programs.
“Vijay has repeatedly taken roles in films that depict Muslims as terrorists or extremists. These negative portrayals harm the image of Islam and fuel prejudice,” said Maulana Razvi. “A man who has contributed to such harmful narratives should not be celebrated by our community.”
Iftar Politics Criticized
The criticism comes shortly after the TVK leader hosted an Iftar party, which many believed was an attempt to build bridges with Tamil Nadu’s Muslim population ahead of upcoming elections. However, Maulana Razvi has dismissed the move as political opportunism.
“Hosting an Iftar doesn’t erase years of misrepresentation. This is not an act of genuine goodwill—it’s a calculated attempt to win votes,” he said.
Fatwa Urges Caution Against Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam
The fatwa specifically advises Muslims to avoid associating with Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam, the political party formed by Vijay, and to refrain from offering any kind of support to the party’s agenda.
“It’s important for the community to recognize the difference between entertainment and leadership,” Maulana Razvi emphasized. “Vijay may have popularity, but his actions through cinema have painted a damaging picture of our faith.”
Political Fallout Ahead?
With the 2025 Tamil Nadu elections approaching, the cleric’s remarks may pose challenges for TVK’s efforts to expand its voter base. While TVK chief Vijay continues to enjoy mass appeal as an actor, religious leaders questioning his commitment to inclusivity could affect minority support.
Political experts believe this episode highlights a larger issue: the transition from celebrity to politician requires accountability—not just popularity.
When Reel Life Impacts Real Life
The controversy has reignited conversations about the responsibilities of film stars who enter politics. For many in the Muslim community, past on-screen roles are more than fiction—they are reflections of broader societal attitudes.
As the debate continues, all eyes are now on TVK leader Vijay—whether he will respond, engage in dialogue, or adjust his political messaging to rebuild trust with critics.
